Joseph Drouhin

History of the estate

Joseph Drouhin, the Icon of Burgundy

Today, Joseph Drouhin embodies the epitome of elegance. The Joseph Drouhin style stems from a high standard, which is expressed from the berry to the barrel. Based in Beaune, the Joseph Drouhin house stretches from Chablis to Mâconnais, and is represented in 90 appellations.

The 130-hectare vineyard is managed using organic farming practices, and biodynamics are well integrated. The cooperage woods used for aging are carefully selected. For the Joseph Drouhin house, drying is crucial as it contributes to the signature of the wines. Fine and harmonious, the wines are infinitely rich.

To allow each climate to express itself, the aging process is meticulously managed. At Joseph Drouhin, the work carried out is very elegant, both in white and red wines. This quest allows the terroirs the opportunity to express themselves. The house is richly endowed with white terroirs, especially in Montrachet and Beaune "le Clos des Mouches". Joseph Drouhin cultivates 75% of chardonnay, with the remaining third in pinot noir. The terroirs reveal a sumptuous complexity. Some of Joseph Drouhin's crus can age for over forty years.

A Centenary House

When Joseph Drouhin arrived in Beaune, he was twenty-two years old. And in 1880, he founded the Joseph Drouhin house. Today, more than a century later, it remains a family business. Throughout his life, Joseph Drouhin was committed to producing quality wines. And when his son Maurice succeeded him, he continued this goal identically.

Maurice Drouhin then acquired parcels of exceptional crus including the legendary Beaune le Clos des Mouches. But he also got his hands on a parcel of Clos de Vougeot. When Robert took over from his father in 1957, he gave the estate its current dimension. He then turned to the Chablis vineyards, sensing their potential.

Pioneers of Organic

The Drouhin estate paved the way for sustainable viticulture in Burgundy. Then, it became an example of organic in Burgundy, in the late eighties. As for biodynamics, it was practiced from the late nineties.

In the process, an oenology laboratory was created in the house. And this with Laurence Jobard, the first female oenologist in Burgundy. Now Philippe, Véronique, Laurent, and Frédéric, the four children of Robert and their mother Françoise Drouhin, run the estate. So, the stage is set for Joseph's great-grandchildren.
