Domaine Raspail-Ay

Wine Commentary

The wines from the Domaine are powerful, with intense color, aromas of red fruits, and a spicy bouquet; they are full-bodied and generous wines; a Gigondas that reflects the Terroir and the Tradition of the appellation. The wine can be consumed 3 or 4 years after bottling, and, depending on the vintage, up to 15 or even 20 years.

History of the estate

The 19-hectare vineyard has been owned by the AY family for five generations now.
The plots are contiguous and surround the Estate, which is situated at the foot of the village of Gigondas, below the natural barrier formed by the Dentelles de Montmirail.

The main grape varieties are the ambassadors of the appellation, predominantly black grenache (over 75%), syrah, and mourvèdre, with vines averaging 45 years old.
These are cultivated for two colors, red wine and rosé wine, as specified in the AOP Gigondas.

The grapes are entirely hand-harvested, sorted on the vine and upon reception, then fully destemmed for fermentation during long vatting periods. The wine is then aged for between 18 and 24 months in large capacity old oak vats (40 to 130 hectoliters).

Jeb Dunnuck Tasting Note

The 2022 Gigondas offers kirsch, Provençal spice, Provençal olives, leather, and loamy earth. Based on 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 10% Mourvèdre and raised in traditional old oak foudres with the Syrah in barrels and demi-muids, it's medium to full-bodied, has the sunny, perfumed, complex style of the vintage, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It's beautifully textured and just a gem of a Gigondas that readers should buy a case of to drink over the coming two decades. Drink 2026-2046.
