Malescot Saint-Exupéry

Château Comments

The motto of Château Malescot Saint Exupéry Troisième Grand Cru Classé is semper ad altum - always higher - and this is how the owners produce a high-quality Margaux every year. While Malescot Saint Exupéry may not have the impressive financial means of its neighbors, this château has managed to shine through its personality and finesse. A unique style, with a superb delicacy of texture and great aromatic complexity.

History of the Château

The history of Château Malescot Saint Exupéry began in 1697 when Louise Escoussés sold her property to Simon Malescot, a counselor to King Louis XIV in the Bordeaux parliament. The estate was then expanded and developed by Simon Malescot and his descendants for over a century. In 1927, Jean-Baptiste Saint-Exupéry, the great-grandfather of the aviator and writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, acquired this Margaux grand cru classé and decided to add his name to the château.
The extravagant lifestyle of the widow Saint-Exupéry forced her to part with this property in 1853. It was Messieurs Fourcade and Boissac who bestowed nobility on this Margaux when it ascended to the rank of Third Grand Cru Classé just two years after its purchase. Equipped with a gravity-fed vat house, very modern for the time, they did everything to ensure high quality with each vintage and uphold the Château's motto.
In 1901, they unfortunately had to resolve to sell the château. The following decades were marked by two world wars and constituted a difficult period for Bordeaux châteaux. It was on June 1, 1955 that Paul and Roger Zuger purchased Malescot Saint Exupéry, which then had only 7 hectares of vineyards. After thirty years of sustained efforts, the château regained its prestige.

Today

Since the 1990 vintage, the quality of the wines from Château Malescot Saint-Exupéry has been improving each year. Some great vintages have indeed made a mark and received critical acclaim. The 2000, 2005, 2009, and 2010 vintages, in particular, are considered near perfection.

Jeb Dunnuck Tasting Note

A serious, fruit-forward wine, the 2025 Château Malescot Saint Exupéry is showing a lot of oak at the moment, yet it still brings beautiful purity of fruit. Ripe red and black fruits, spicy oak, graphite, and smoky, tobacco-like nuances all define the aromatics, and on the palate, it's medium-bodied, with a pure, layered mouthfeel and ripe tannins. I suspect it's going to integrate its oak over the course of its élevage and will be an outstanding wine.
