Château d'Issan produces wines of rare elegance, typical of Margaux. They feature a silky texture, perfect balance, and refined substance. The tannins are present yet always of great finesse, enveloped by vibrant fruit. The aromatic profile is complex, with floral and fruity notes. The impression on the palate is persistent, testifying to great aging potential. A racy and harmonious wine.
Château d'Issan is one of the oldest estates in the Bordeaux region. Its history dates back to the Middle Ages. The property, then known as Mothe Cantenac and later Théobon, was already producing quality wine, appreciated by the greatest figures of the world. Located on the banks of the Gironde, it once belonged to the lords of Cantenac. According to some historians, this stronghold was the rallying point for English armies after their defeat at Castillon-la-Bataille in 1453. Then, for three centuries, several families succeeded one another at the head of the château: the Noailhans, the Meyracs, the illustrious Ségurs, the Salignacs, the de La Vergnes, the Escodeca de Boisses… Starting in 1575, the d'Essenault family took over the estate and renamed it, through a contraction of their name, Château d'Issan. The 1855 classification recognized its fabulous terroir, and it attained the rank of Third Grand Cru Classé. At that time, Issan was one of the only estates referred to as a "Château," alongside only Lafite, Margaux, Latour, and Beychevelle. In 1866, Gustave Roy took over Château d'Issan, where he had the first gravity-flow cellars built. He had to manage the phylloxera crisis and the massive replanting of grafted vines that followed.
Today
In the 20th century, Issan experienced a revival thanks to the impetus of the Cruse family, who undertook titanic work on the property. Lionel Cruse successfully carried out the restoration of the château, the replanting of the vineyard, and the modernization of the facilities. Since 1998, thanks to the investments made by his son Emmanuel Cruse in the vineyard and the cellars, the wines of Issan reflect the authenticity of the terroir more than ever. Jacky Lorenzetti, an audacious entrepreneur, joined the Cruse family in this winemaking adventure in 2012. Emmanuel Cruse recalls with humor: "I was already managing Châteaux Pédesclaux and Lilian Ladouys for him (president of the Racing Métro 92 rugby club) before he entered the capital of the family château. With him, I work in serenity." Through tenacity, passion, and effort, the various generations who have worked toward the renaissance of Château d'Issan have restored all of its prestige.
