Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion

Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion

Château La Mission Haut-Brion produces a Pessac-Léognan of great nobility, often considered the most "Haut-Brion" of the Mission Haut-Brion wines. This red wine offers a silky texture, refined substance, and a perfect balance between power and elegance. Its complex aromatic profile evolves with grace, supported by ripe tannins. Endowed with exceptional aging potential, it blossoms over time, revealing the full richness of its terroir. La Chapelle de La Mission Haut-Brion is its second wine.

Château history

It was in 1540 that Arnaud de Lestonnac, founder of a dynasty at the heart of Bordeaux’s winemaking history, purchased the Arregedhuys plot from Louis de Roustaing. He quickly realized the potential of this terroir and decided to create an estate dedicated to vine cultivation. His granddaughter, Olive, bequeathed a rent in her will to be paid to "good religious men." The property thus came into the hands of the Mission priests, or Lazarists: La Mission Haut-Brion was born. The wine of La Mission Haut-Brion is appreciated by the greatest figures in the world; Cardinal Richelieu himself exclaimed when speaking of this great wine: "If God forbade drinking, would He have made this wine so good?" The wines of Château La Mission Haut-Brion are also highly regarded in the United States and England, where it took home the gold medal at the Universal Exhibition in London in 1868.
In 1919, the Woltner family acquired the estate and remained its owners until the 1970s, when it was sold to the Dillon family. The Duchess of Mouchy, then head of Domaine Clarence Dillon, quickly set about renovating the estate: the château’s interior decor, a high-tech cellar, a tasting room, and the restoration of the chapel.
Prince Robert of Luxembourg, heir to the Dillon family, currently manages the château. In 2009, Liv-ex, the world’s leading fine wine exchange, proposed a new, unofficial classification of the 1855 Bordeaux wines: La Mission Haut-Brion was elevated to the rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé. La Mission, more than ever, shines in the firmament of the Bordeaux elite.
