Chateau Lafite Rothschild

Chateau Lafite Rothschild

Château Lafite Rothschild stands as an accomplished expression of a great Bordeaux wine, with a silky texture and tannins of great finesse. Its perfect balance and surprising aromatic freshness make it a Pauillac of rare elegance. This exceptional vintage reveals a Cabernet Sauvignon of great nobility, carried by notes of cedar and graphite. A wine for long aging, with a lasting impression.

Château history

Château Lafite Rothschild had been producing wine for three centuries before the de Ségur family acquired it in 1670. Driven by its ambitious owners, Lafite wine achieved resounding success in the upper echelons of French society. Bottles from this Bordeaux estate could be found at Versailles, where the court swore by what was known as "the King's wine."
A few years after the famous 1855 classification, the fate of the château fell into the hands of a family that would leave an indelible mark on the history of French wine: the Rothschilds. Baron James was the first Rothschild to head Lafite, but it was after the Second World War that the estate reached a true turning point under the leadership of Baron Élie. He rehabilitated and expanded the estate, while his modern approach to communication, such as organizing "tastings" in London, allowed Lafite Rothschild to regain its position in the wine market.
Baron Éric, Élie's nephew, took the reins in 1974 and undertook several projects. Replanting efforts were coupled with soil amendments (a process used to adjust soil composition to improve its natural function) as well as the construction of a revolutionary aging cellar designed by Catalan architect Ricardo Bofill. During the 80s and 90s, the wines of the Médoc reached another milestone thanks to exceptional vintages like 1982, so highly praised by the famous American critic Robert Parker.
Today
The turn of the century was navigated with serenity; exceptional vintages followed one another, cementing the great wines of Château Lafite Rothschild in the annals of history. The 2000, 2005, 2009, and 2010 vintages will be talked about for a long time to come.
