Chateau Lascombes

Chateau Lascombes

Driven by the high standards of its management and the work accomplished in the vineyards, Château Lascombes is clearly among the best estates in Margaux. A firm and round wine that combines power with ripe tannins, it possesses an impressive quality, befitting a Second Grand Cru Classé. Although this wine is built for aging, the generous proportion of Merlot in the blend makes it very accessible in its youth.

Château history

Chevalier Antoine de Lascombes, born in 1625, who bequeathed his surname to the estate, is the earliest known owner of the château. One of his descendants, Jean-François de Lascombes, a counselor at the Bordeaux Parliament, continued the château's development by investing his fortune into it. In 1855, his efforts were rewarded, and Lascombes attained the rank of Second Grand Cru Classé in Margaux.
In 1952, Alexis Lichine, a proprietor (notably of Château Prieuré-Lichine) and wine merchant, purchased the château. His drive for excellence led him to restructure Château Lascombes. The estate then enjoyed some very fine years, and its reputation extended well beyond French borders.
In 2001, Dominique Befve was appointed director of the château, which was then owned by the Colony Capital group. Drawing on his experience with the best (including Lafite-Rothschild), he completely overhauled the winemaking methods, notably by introducing more efficient, modern facilities, with the goal of reaching a new level of quality.
Today
In 2011, the MACSF group (Mutuelle d'assurances du corps de santé français) became the owner of Château Lascombes, continuously pursuing the work begun by its first owners to perpetuate the estate and elevate the quality of its wines ever higher.
