Located on the border of Pauillac and Saint-Julien, the Tour de Saint-Maubert has stood unshakable for over 600 years. Château Latour is situated approximately 50 km northwest of Bordeaux. The heart of its terroir overlooks the Gironde estuary. This privileged location, 300 meters from the estuary, tempers climatic extremes, particularly frosts at the beginning of the vegetative cycle.
Château Latour is one of the five First Growths. The hallmark of these wines is undoubtedly their richness. A very authentic expression of Cabernet Sauvignon, it translates into full-bodied and highly tannic wines. Quite fierce in their youth, Château Latour wines open up slowly but surely. Their unparalleled endurance allows great vintages to evolve for a very long time, ultimately revealing highly complex aromatic spectrums: fresh hazelnut, leather, blackcurrant, and graphite. The quintessential wine for aging…
Château Latour owes its name to the Saint Maubert tower, built by the English to protect the estuary during the Hundred Years' War. The estate only turned to winemaking later, when the de Ségur family acquired it in 1695. Nicknamed "the Prince of Vines," the Marquis Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur, who also owned Mouton and Lafite at the time, aimed to satisfy the demands of English high society. The Marquis improved his wine to such an extent that its price increased fivefold during the 18th century.
The descendants of the de Ségur family retained the majority of the property's shares and, in 1842, created the first *société civile agricole* (agricultural civil company). The estate changed hands in 1962 when an English company, Pearson, bought the majority of the shares. Another British company, Allied Lyons, took control in 1989 until Château Latour finally returned to a French owner in 1993: businessman François Pinault.
The estate's great success is due to the location of its vines—47 contiguous hectares known as "l'enclos," situated between Léoville Las Cases and Pichon Longueville. Resting on a ridge of Garonne gravel very close to the Gironde, this deep, warm, and well-drained soil is the ideal location for producing the best Cabernet Sauvignon in the world.
Today
Under the leadership of François Pinault, Château Latour began major renovations: new cellars, a tasting room, and a new architectural line for the main building. The work was completed in 2003, and a new technical team was put in place under the direction of Frédéric Engerer, who has been manager since 1998. Today, Château Latour is a team of 70 people, both in the vineyard and in the cellar. Constantly seeking harmony and precision, Château Latour experiments with new methods such as biodynamics.
