Domaine Belargus crafts vibrant wines, driven by Chenin Blanc. We appreciate the purity of fruit, the fresh balance, and the saline minerality. The red Anjou wines display beautiful substance, present yet silky tannins, and radiant fruit. The Savennières are more taut, with sharp acidity and evident aging potential. The sweet wines express a complex aromatic richness and a luscious texture.
Domaine Belargus, located in the heart of the Anjou Noir, reached a significant turning point in 2018. That year, Ivan Massonat, a passionate oenophile, took over the estate from Jo Pithon, an iconic figure of the region.
Ivan Massonat’s arrival marked a shift toward biodynamic farming, building upon the organic foundations already in place. It was during this conversion that he discovered a butterfly, the Belargus, whose presence serves as a testament to the estate's biodiversity and inspired the property's new name. The estate spans 24 hectares of exceptional Anjou Noir terroirs, entirely dedicated to Chenin Blanc. Among these plots are "Les Treilles," a steep hillside within a regional nature reserve, and the "Clos des Ruchères," a monopole located in Savennières, rooted in schist soil. The approach at Domaine Belargus is focused on highlighting each individual terroir through Chenin, utilizing rigorous parcel-by-parcel vinification.
