Château history

Domaine Méo-Camuzet, located in Vosne-Romanée, is an iconic figure of the Côte de Nuits. Its history is intimately linked to Étienne Camuzet, a politician from the Côte-d'Or, whose legacy is perpetuated by Jean-Nicolas Méo.
The history of the estate is rooted in Selongey, north of the Côte-d'Or, where the Méo family settled. In the mid-19th century, the Méo children initially pursued academic paths, becoming engineers, polytechnicians, or teachers. However, Marcelle Lamarche-Confuron, who came from an old winemaking family in Vosne, played a decisive role in the family's establishment in Vosne-Romanée. Her cousin, Étienne Camuzet (1897-1946), was not only a winemaker but also the village mayor and a deputy for the Côte-d'Or. In 1920, Étienne Camuzet acquired the Château du Clos de Vougeot, which he would later pass on to the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin. A shrewd man, he possessed a particular talent for identifying great terroirs. Upon his death, without a direct heir, Jean Méo inherited his lands—a true treasure. Jean Méo was working in General de Gaulle's office at the time and therefore entrusted the estate to Henri Jayer under a sharecropping agreement until 1988.
Jean-Nicolas Méo infuses a modern style while respecting Burgundian traditions, which places the estate among the most sought-after. Méo-Camuzet wines are distinguished by their depth and their ability to reflect the expression of the terroir, offering a vibrant interpretation of the nuances of Burgundy. Among the iconic cuvées are prestigious Grand Crus such as Clos de Vougeot and Richebourg, symbols of power and elegance. The Premier Crus Les Chaumes, Aux Brûlées, Au Cros Parantoux, and Aux Boudots also illustrate the estate's expertise. Also noteworthy is the Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits Clos Saint Philibert, a more accessible but no less seductive expression of this great estate.
