Domaine Claude Dugat
Wine Commentary
One cannot speak of Gevrey-Chambertin without mentioning Claude Dugat, the quintessential winemaker of this famous appellation. More than just a producer, he is a true protector, a guardian of the quality and style of Gevrey-Chambertin wines. The fruity, fleshy, and dense style of his wines has made the domain renowned. One always finds that immediate pleasure, linked to the vibrant fruitiness of Pinot Noir and the strength of the Gevrey-Chambertin terroirs.
History of the estate
Firmly established in Gevrey-Chambertin for several generations, the Dugat family now owns 6 hectares all around the village. Claude Dugat's grandfather used to produce 12 barrels, while the estate now produces 100 per year. In 1988, Claude decided to abandon the use of fertilizers and herbicides and began green harvesting. The philosophy he established is still in place today: low yields, uniform maturity, and optimal concentration. At the turn of the 1990s, he decided to forgo the wine trade. He was fortunate to be able to vinify in the heart of the village, in the tithe cellar, which his father purchased in 1955.
Claude Dugat's wines, known for their purity, were quickly spotted, appreciated, and especially highly rated by critics. Many enthusiasts and professionals realize that his wines are as rare as they are exceptional.
Today
Currently, his three children are taking up the torch, Bertrand, Laetitia, and Jeanne also have a passion for elevating this magnificent Gevrey-Chambertin terroir, where they grew up. They have also established a quality wine trade in Côte de Nuits named La Gibryotte.
La Gibryotte
History of the estate
What does its name signify first and foremost?
It is purely imaginative but it encapsulates the essence of the wines they cultivate. Indeed, La Gibryotte is a combination of: Gibriaçois, the name given to the inhabitants of Gevrey-Chambertin, and Layotte, the term used for the vineyard workers in the time of their grandparents. The women, who carried out the numerous manual tasks in the vineyard, used to wear a fabric hat that shielded them from both the sun and wind. Layotte contributes to this Burgundian tradition to which they are particularly devoted and which they strive to preserve in their profession.
La Gibryotte is a team, or rather a family one might say. Bertrand, Laetitia, and Jeanne have been working for several years now with their father, Claude Dugat, who tirelessly imparts his expertise and knowledge so that today, in their turn, they can passionately produce wines, thus continuing the family tradition and making them the 5th generation of winemakers in Gevrey-Chambertin.
The wines of La Gibryotte are the result of a blend of several cuvées selected for their aromas and character. Through their complementary nature, they achieve complex wines that are very representative of Gevrey-Chambertin.
