Jeb Dunnuck Tasting Note

The grand vin 2017 Chateau Cos D'Estournel checks in as 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, and 1% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot brought up in 60% new French oak. It's a classic 2017 that shows the straight, very classic style of the vintage with its medium to full body, ripe, present tannins, and solid spine of acidity. Beautiful cassis, green tobacco, graphite, and cedar pencil notes all emerge from the glass, and as with the Pagodes, it's still tight and reserved on the palate. Reminding me of the 1996 with its classic, balanced style, give bottles 5-7 years and enjoy over the following two decades.

About the Producer

Château Cos d'Estournel, a Second Cru Classé of Saint-Estèphe, is an iconic estate in the Médoc. Its founder, Louis Gaspard d'Estournel, a prominent figure of the 19th century, was one of the first to export his wines to India, earning him the nickname "Maharaja of Saint-Estèphe." Today, Michel Reybier is dedicated to revealing the full potential of this remarkable terroir. Ideally situated on a hill overlooking the Gironde, the vineyard grants the wines of Cos d'Estournel remarkable elegance, aromatic complexity, and aging potential, where Cabernet Sauvignon expresses itself with particular intensity. In addition to the grand vin Château Cos d'Estournel, the estate also produces Les Pagodes de Cos, an ambitious second wine, as well as a rare Cos d'Estournel Blanc, testifying to the richness of the terroir. Legend has it that the château's iconic pagodas were inspired by the oriental architecture discovered during its founder's travels. More recently, the range has been enriched with G d'Estournel, sourced from rigorously selected plots in the northern Médoc. The estate works notably with appellations such as Second Crus, which extend its signature with consistency. Among the most sought-after cuvées are Château Cos d'Estournel, Château Cos d'Estournel 'Les Pagodes de Cos', and Château Cos d'Estournel Blanc, all useful benchmarks for understanding the identity of the estate.
