History of the estate
A Family Estate
Christophe SABON is now crafting top-tier Côtes du Rhône thanks to Aimé. When Aimé SABON returned from military service in 1967, he took over his father's vineyards, which until then had been supplying grapes to a cooperative winery. He also took over his father-in-law's vineyards, which had been selling to traders up until then.
Thus, in 1973, the Domaine de la Janasse was established. It takes its name from a family farm in Courthézon and a place of the same name. Aimé SABON's ambition is evident in his acquisition of terroirs, so much so that he tripled the size of the estate, growing it from 15 to 55 hectares.
After training in Beaune and then in Macon in oenology, his son Christophe SABON became involved in the estate in the early 90s. The Côtes-du-Rhône here are meticulously cared for and the Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines have a reputation that needs no introduction. The estate remains a family-run business.
Today …
In 2017, the SABON family announced the purchase of a new estate, the Clos Saint-Antonin, which also opened up a new appellation for them, in Côtes-du-Rhône-Villages Plan de Dieu (4.5 hectares). To expand its portfolio, Clos Saint-Antonin also acquired just under 2 hectares in Châteauneuf-du-Pape from the Domaine de la Janasse (a total of 18 hectares within this AOC).
