Jeb Dunnuck Tasting Note

The grand vin from the Mentzelopoulos family and late manager Paul Pontallier is the 2014 Château Margaux, which checks in as a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, and the balance Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, as always raised in 100% new barrels, and representing a scant 36% of the estate’s total production. A regal, classy, and nuanced beauty, its ruby/purple-tinged color is followed by a terrific perfume of cassis, licorice, spicy oak, sandalwood, and a hint of vanilla. With a beautiful core of sweet fruit, ripe, polished tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish, this full-bodied 2014 brilliantly shows the classy, elegant style of the vintage. Give bottles 5–7 years and it should deliver plenty of pleasure over the following three decades.

About the Producer

Château Margaux, Premier Grand Cru Classé, is a name that resonates with the excellence of the Margaux appellation, in the heart of the Médoc. Its history is rich, dating back several centuries, and its prestige has been built over time thanks to passionate generations. Today, Corinne Mentzelopoulos embodies the continuity of this illustrious estate. The wines of Château Margaux are celebrated for their elegance, aromatic complexity, and ability to span decades. They offer a palette of deep flavors, where black fruits blend harmoniously with notes of tobacco and cedar. The estate also produces Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, a refined second wine that captivates with its balance and potential for evolution. Finally, Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux, a rare and expressive white wine, brings a touch of freshness to this iconic range. History tells us that Thomas Jefferson, a great wine enthusiast, particularly appreciated Château Margaux, thus testifying to its timeless quality. The estate notably works with appellations such as Premiers Crus, which consistently extend its signature. Among the most sought-after vintages are Château Margaux, Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, and Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux, which serve as useful benchmarks for understanding the identity of the estate.
