Undoubtedly the most flamboyant of the four fantastic wines of Médoc, both in its style and presentation. Mouton Rothschild has always been decidedly more modern than its neighbors, perpetually seeking concentration and richness. With its artistic flair, this wonderful Pauillac draws attention to the wines of Bordeaux, it has long been a standard-bearer for the region's chateaux. One could not hope for better...
Château Mouton Rothschild Premier Grand Cru Classé is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon. It is generally powerful with an almost opaque and purple color. The bouquet of blackcurrant cream, graphite, oak, and spices compose a wide aromatic spectrum that will evolve over the years, and even decades, into more advanced notes of tobacco, smoke, and cedar.
The history of the château began in 1853 when Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild purchased Château Brane-Mouton. He renamed it: Mouton Rothschild was born. The estate didn't truly flourish until the early 1920s with the arrival of Baron Philippe. His contribution to the world of wine is immeasurable. His first significant decision was to bottle the wine at the château, a novel concept at a time when wine was delivered to traders in barrels. This decision, which soon became universally accepted in Bordeaux, inevitably required a larger storage capacity. Combining practicality with pleasure, Baron Philippe commissioned architect Charles Siclis to design the spectacular 'Grand Chai'. In 1945, the Baron enlisted artist Philippe Julian to illustrate the bottles of the victory vintage, a stroke of genius that began a unique tradition in the wine world. Thus began a love story between art and wine, one that is far from over.
After a long struggle, Baron Philippe succeeded in having Mouton Rothschild reclassified in the 1855 classification, achieving the rank of Premier Cru Grand Cru Classé in 1973. This placed him in the elite group where he was logically destined to be.
Upon the Baron's death in 1988, Philippine de Rothschild took the reins and continued her father's dream. In 1993, she created a second wine, 'le petit mouton', crafted with the same care as its 'big brother'. This wine is made from the estate's younger vines. This second selection underscores the Rothschild family's commitment to quality, making the grand wine even more concentrated.
In 2012, a magnificent vat room was established under the direction of Philippine de Rothschild.
Since the Baroness's death in 2014, her three children have been managing the Rothschild empire, with Mouton remaining its flagship.
