Jeb Dunnuck Tasting Note

Rocking stuff, the 2023 Saint Joseph has a gorgeous meaty nose of smoked bacon, ripe red and black cherries, leather, and violets. It's medium-bodied and concentrated on the palate, with a pure, layered mouthfeel and ultra-fine tannins. This cuvée is underrated in the market, and savvy readers will buy it by the case year in and year out. Drink this terrific Saint Joseph over the coming 15 years. Drink 2026-2041. I continue to rave about the Condrieu and Saint-Joseph from the family of Andre Perret. The Condrieu have distinctive characters and it's always hard to pick a favorite. I seem to flipflop each year, with the Chery cuvée bringing that extra intensity in 2024. I'll be a buyer. Also don't miss the reds here. While known largely for their Condrieu, this estate makes brilliant, age-worthy Saint-Josephs!

About the Producer

Domaine Andre Perret, an iconic figure of the Northern Rhône Valley, is anchored in the heart of Verlieu, in the commune of Chavanay. In the 1980s, André Perret, a biologist by training, took over the family estate and initiated a new era, notably through the planting of new vines. The estate then expanded into the Saint-Joseph appellation, complementing the production of the famous Condrieu. Today, Domaine Andre Perret spans about ten hectares, favoring an expert approach in crafting expressive and highly elegant white wines. The Coteau de Chéry and Clos Chanson cuvées, in AOC Condrieu, enjoy a flattering reputation, testifying to the estate's expertise. The Saint-Joseph Les Grisières also deserves attention, the fruit of meticulous work in the vineyard and precise vinification. It is said that some particularly steep plots require the use of winches, highlighting André Perret's commitment to manual labor that respects the terroir and traditions. An essential destination for lovers of great wines from the Rhône Valley. Among the most sought-after cuvées are Andre Perret Condrieu Coteau du Chery, Andre Perret Condrieu Clos Chanson, and Andre Perret Saint-Joseph, all useful benchmarks for understanding the house's identity.
