Vinous Tasting Note

(a blend of 54% cabernet sauvignon, 38% merlot, 5% cabernet franc and 3% petit verdot) Dark ruby-red with purple highlights. Floral a romas of red cherry, blackcurrant, licorice and tar. At once smooth, sweet and nicely delineated, with good lift to the delicate, lightly saline red berry, sassafrass and white pepper flavors. Finishes with sweet tannins and sneaky persistence. As usual, Beychevelle is not a blockbuster and left me wondering if it couldn't be just a bit more concentrated, but this 2010 seems to have more stuffing than usual. The high percentage of merlot gives it early appeal.

About the Producer

Château Beychevelle, with its refined architecture overlooking the Gironde estuary, is an iconic figure of the Saint-Julien appellation in the Médoc. Its picturesque name evokes the era when ships would salute the Duc d'Épernon, Admiral of France, by lowering their sails. This Fourth Grand Cru Classé, now owned by Grands Millésimes de France and managed by Philippe Blanc, benefits from a remarkable terroir of deep gravel, where Cabernet Sauvignon expresses itself with splendor. The wines of Château Beychevelle are distinguished by their natural elegance, silky texture, and aromatic complexity, offering a perfect balance between power and finesse. It is said that the Duc d'Épernon, owner of the estate, loved Beychevelle so much that he had a veritable palace built there. In addition to its grand vin, Château Beychevelle, the estate also produces L'Amiral de Beychevelle, a second wine of great delicacy, as well as Les Brulières de Beychevelle, a more accessible expression of the Saint-Julien terroir. A Haut-Médoc harmoniously completes the range of this prestigious estate. The domain works notably with appellations such as Quatrièmes Crus, which consistently extend its signature. Among the most sought-after cuvées are Château Beychevelle, Château Beychevelle 'Amiral de Beychevelle', and Les Brulières de Beychevelle, all useful benchmarks for understanding the house's identity.
