Jeb Dunnuck Tasting Note

One of those wines that punches well above its price point, the 2018 Château Charmail comes from the northern part of the Médoc and is a mix of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot brought up in mostly used barrels. Beautiful darker currants and cassis fruits as well as tobacco, chocolate, and damp earth give way to medium to full-bodied 2018 with a plush, rounded texture, a terrific mid-palate, silky tannins, and a great finish. It's a gorgeous wine and I think even a step up over the 2016. Enjoy bottles any time over the coming 10-12 years.

About the Producer

Château Charmail, located in Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne at the gateway to Saint-Estèphe, embodies the elegance of the Haut-Médoc. This Cru Bourgeois has forged a solid reputation over the years, thanks to prominent figures such as Olivier Sèze and Bernard d’Halluin, supported by Sébastien Pineau and the guidance of Hubert de Boüard. Today, the Goudet-Liquard family passionately continues the history of this estate. Château Charmail wines are distinguished by their immediate charm, offering an ample texture and silky tannins, while maintaining excellent aging potential. The estate produces an elegant and accessible Haut-Médoc, an authentic reflection of its terroir. The Tours de Charmail cuvée offers a flavorful introduction to the house style. A local anecdote suggests that the name Charmail originates from an ancient battle, where the vines served as a fortified refuge, testifying to the deep bond between the wine and local history. A particularly successful expression of the Haut-Médoc. Among the most sought-after cuvées are Château Charmail and Tours de Charmail, useful benchmarks for understanding the house's identity. At Château Charmail, this consistency between terroir, style, and high standards explains the enduring attachment of wine lovers.
