Vinous Tasting Note

(racked three days before my visit) Full ruby-red. Knockout nose melds black cherry, violet, licorice and brown spices; this is wild yet aristocratic in a Chambertin way. Densely packed, silky and incredibly intense, with palate-saturating flavors of black cherry, spices, minerals and bitter chocolate. As remarkably rich as this is (it's carrying 15% alcohol, according to Ponsot), there's no impression of undue weight. This is old-vines Clos de la Roche in all its savage splendor. Endless finish. Should make a cellar treasure.

About the Producer

Domaine Ponsot, a Burgundian institution firmly rooted in Morey-Saint-Denis, where family history has been written for several generations. Founded in 1872, this estate has left its mark on the history of Burgundy wines. Today, driven by a passionate figure, Domaine Ponsot continues to elevate this exceptional terroir of the Côte de Nuits. Its wines are distinguished by a style that is both profound and mineral, a vibrant expression of the terroirs from which they originate. Among the flagship cuvées, we find the famous Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Cuvée Vieilles Vignes, an absolute benchmark, as well as the rare Clos des Monts Luisants Vieilles Vignes. The estate also excels in its interpretations of Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru and Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru. It is said that the Ponsot family was among the first to bottle its entire production at the estate, a bold practice for the time. The Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru and the Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru Cuvée des Alouettes complete this prestigious range, a reflection of the house's unique expertise. An essential signature. Among the most sought-after cuvées are Domaine Ponsot Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 'Cuvée Vieilles Vignes', Domaine Ponsot Clos des Monts Luisants Vieilles Vignes, and Domaine Ponsot Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru, useful benchmarks for understanding the identity of the house.
