Jeb Dunnuck Tasting Note

The finest showing I've ever seen for this beauty (and I've been lucky enough to drink plenty), the 2008 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou offers a still youthful vibrant hue as well as sensational aromatics of pure crème de cassis, freshly sharpened cedar pencils, crushed stone, graphite, and an undeniable sense of minerality. It’s concentrated, medium to full-bodied, has beautiful tannins, and a thrilling finish. This is a magical Saint-Julien that readers should snatch up. it's going to take another 4-6 years to hit full maturity and will evolve gracefully over the following 2-3 decades if well-stored.

About the Producer

Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, an emblem of Saint-Julien, owes its name to its magnificent gravelly slopes. This remarkable terroir, ideally drained, allows for the perfect ripening of the grapes. Owned by the Borie family, this prestigious Deuxième Grand Cru Classé has been raised to the pinnacle of its appellation through rigorous and passionate management. Today, Bruno-Eugène Borie embodies this tradition of excellence, perpetuating an ancestral expertise that is reflected in every bottle. The wines of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou are distinguished by their elegance, aromatic complexity, and aging potential. The grand vin, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, is particularly prized as the ultimate expression of this unique terroir, as is La Croix de Beaucaillou, its second wine, which offers a more accessible approach to the Ducru style. An anecdote suggests that Bordeaux mixture, a major innovation for viticulture, was born here almost by chance. Ducru-Beaucaillou remains a symbol of Saint-Julien, a place where tradition and modernity unite to create wines of incomparable finesse. The estate notably works with appellations such as Deuxièmes Crus, which consistently extend its signature. Among the most sought-after cuvées are Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 'La Croix de Beaucaillou', and Le Petit Ducru de Ducru-Beaucaillou, all useful benchmarks for understanding the house's identity.
