Jeb Dunnuck Tasting Note

The Grand Vin 2021 Château Léoville Poyferré from this brilliant estate checks in as 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot. It has a serious, concentrated, inward style as well as impressive red and black currant-like fruit supported by notes of graphite, smoked tobacco, spicy oak, and chocolate. With terrific richness, a layered, concentrated mid-palate, and fine tannins, this is clearly one of the gems in the vintage. It needs to be forgotten for just 4-5 years, and I wouldn't be surprised to see it evolve for over two decades.

About the Producer

Château Léoville Poyferré, a Second Grand Cru Classé, is a jewel of the Saint-Julien appellation in the heart of the Médoc. Its history is intertwined with that of the great Léoville estate, of which it was once a part. The Cuvelier family, owners for several generations, has breathed new life into the estate, propelling this cru to qualitative heights. Today, Sara Lecompte Cuvelier manages the family estate with passion, dedicated to revealing the unique expression of this exceptional terroir. The wines of Léoville Poyferré are distinguished by their aromatic richness and balance, offering a consistently high-quality tasting experience. One discovers aromas of ripe black fruits, delicately roasted notes, and a velvety texture on the palate. Le Pavillon de Léoville Poyferré offers a different interpretation of the terroir, while Château Moulin Riche completes the range. A fine illustration of the excellence of Saint-Julien wines, whose history tells us that in the 18th century, the Marquis de Léoville hosted the greatest personalities of the era at his table, a testament to the prestige of his wines. The estate notably works with appellations such as Second Growths, which consistently extend its signature.
