One cannot speak of Gevrey-Chambertin without mentioning Claude Dugat, an iconic winemaker of this appellation. More than just a producer, he is a guardian of the quality and style of Gevrey-Chambertin wines. The fruity, sensual, and dense style of his wines has built the estate's reputation. One always finds an immediate pleasure in them, linked to the vibrant fruitiness of the Pinot Noir and the strength of the Gevrey-Chambertin terroirs.
Firmly established in Gevrey-Chambertin for several generations, the Dugat family, and Claude Dugat in particular, now farms approximately 6 hectares of vines located all around the village. Claude Dugat's grandfather produced 12 barrels at the time, whereas the estate now produces 100 per year.
In 1988, Claude Dugat made the decision to stop using fertilizers and herbicides and began practicing green harvesting. The philosophy he implemented at that time remains relevant today: it is based on low yields, homogeneous maturity, and optimal concentration of the grapes. At the turn of the 1990s, he decided to stop selling to merchants (négoce). He is fortunate to vinify in the heart of the village, in the "cellier des dîmes" (tithe cellar), purchased by his father in 1955. Claude Dugat's wines are astonishing in their purity and were quickly spotted, appreciated, and, above all, highly rated by critics. Many enthusiasts and professionals have realized that his wines are as rare as they are exceptional. La Gibryotte, the name given to a portion of his production, is the result of the union of "Gibriaçois," the name for the inhabitants of Gevrey-Chambertin, and "Layotte," the name given to female winemakers in the time of their grandparents. It is a way of recalling their attachment to Burgundian tradition. Now, Bertrand, Laetitia, and Jeanne work alongside their father, Claude Dugat, perpetuating the family's expertise.
