Chateau Charmail

How to enjoy Charmail wines:
Due to a unique blend of grape varieties, vineyard work that has always prioritized grape ripeness, and vinification involving cold pre-fermentation maceration, Charmail wines often have a flavor profile that allows them to be enjoyed young. The wines generally present with fruit, volume on the palate, and very tight tannins. This ability to be enjoyed young is in no way contradictory to a remarkable capacity for aging, thanks to the wines' tannic richness.

In all cases, it is recommended to "decant" the wines for a long time (a few hours for vintages 5 to 7 years old, and much longer for very recent vintages) because, throughout their production, they have been intentionally protected from air and are therefore very likely to appear relatively closed.

Château history

Château Charmail is certainly one of the best value-for-money wines in the Médoc. It occupies the finest land in Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne, a village neighboring Saint-Estèphe. The gravel ridges overlooking the Gironde estuary offer an exceptional terroir for producing wines that possess both richness and subtlety.
Château Charmail already enjoys an excellent reputation and renown built over more than forty years. The reason is none other than the remarkable continuity of the men and women who have worked toward its development; managed from 1982 by Olivier Sèze, a passionate and visionary agronomist, the lands of Charmail welcomed an entrepreneur from the North, Bernard d’Halluin, in 2008 for a five-year tandem management period, paving the way for a most promising future.
In 2020, Bernard d’Halluin and his teams, led by Sébastien Pineau (himself trained by Olivier Sèze) and advised by Hubert de Boüard (a talented oenologist and co-owner of the iconic Château Angélus), achieved the status of Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel.
The vineyard is currently in the process of converting to organic farming. The wines are accessible in their youth and suitable for aging; the grand vin of Château Charmail boasts a price-to-quality ratio that few can challenge, combined with a surprising modernity.
With the arrival of the Goudet-Liquard family in 2021, after 20 years spent in the United States and England, the estate has entered a new era. Their arrival made it possible to reunite the three neighbors—Château Charmail, Château Bardis, and Château Saint-Paul—which, more than a century ago, formed the original Charmail. This new, contiguous estate is the prerequisite for the true expression of its terroir.
