The Condrieu Clos Chanson Perret 2022 stands out for its remarkable tension, a chiseled profile that elevates the natural generosity of this sunny and warm vintage. On the palate, the brightness of ripe lemon and the delicacy of white flowers harmonize with a subtle note of fresh almond, bringing beautiful energy to the texture. The tasting experience stretches toward a mouth-watering finish of great purity, confirming the promising youth of this great white from the Rhône.

Jeb Dunnuck Tasting Note

The 2022 Condrieu Clos Chanson is possibly a step down from the 2021, but it nevertheless has remarkable aromatics of orange blossom, apricots, flowers, and marmalade in a medium to full-bodied, forward, supple, ready-to-go style. Drink bottles through 2030. Unquestionably, some of my favorite Condrieu, as well as Saint-Joseph, emerges from this tiny estate located off route N7, just south of Condrieu. Releasing three Condrieu, you can’t go wrong with any of them, and the base cuvée is well worth a case purchase each year. The two single vineyards always bring more richness and complexity, but they both have their own style depending on the vintage. And while their Condrieu get all the attention, Perret’s Saint Joseph Blanc is always outstanding as well. As to the reds, the classic Saint-Joseph comes from sites all in the northern part of the appellation and is destemmed and aged in roughly 20% new 400-liter barrels. They’ll also do an old vine Saint-Joseph Les Grisières in top vintages, a vineyard selection that’s all destemmed and sees a slightly longer élevage in 30% new oak. They age beautifully, hitting prime time 4-6 years after the vintage, and evolve for 10-15 years thereafter. They’re easily mistaken for a Côte Rotie in blind tastings. Lastly, while Andre is still fully involved, he has been joined in the cellar by his daughter, Marie, who previously made wine in both California and Chile. As I’ve written many times, Rhône lovers need to have these wines in their cellars.

About the Producer

Domaine Andre Perret, an iconic figure of the Northern Rhône Valley, is anchored in the heart of Verlieu, in the commune of Chavanay. In the 1980s, André Perret, a biologist by training, took over the family estate and initiated a new era, notably through the planting of new vines. The estate then expanded into the Saint-Joseph appellation, complementing the production of the famous Condrieu. Today, Domaine Andre Perret spans about ten hectares, favoring an expert approach in crafting expressive and highly elegant white wines. The Coteau de Chéry and Clos Chanson cuvées, in AOC Condrieu, enjoy a flattering reputation, testifying to the estate's expertise. The Saint-Joseph Les Grisières also deserves attention, the fruit of meticulous work in the vineyard and precise vinification. It is said that some particularly steep plots require the use of winches, highlighting André Perret's commitment to manual labor that respects the terroir and traditions. An essential destination for lovers of great wines from the Rhône Valley. Among the most sought-after cuvées are Andre Perret Condrieu Coteau du Chery, Andre Perret Condrieu Clos Chanson, and Andre Perret Saint-Joseph, all useful benchmarks for understanding the house's identity.
