Jeb Dunnuck Tasting Note

The 2016 Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion checks in as a Merlot-heavy blend, 57.5% Merlot and 42.5% Cabernet Sauvignon. About as pure and seamless (yet sexy) as they come in the vintage, it offers awesome notes of dried flowers, sweet currants, cedarwood, forest floor, and exotic spices. With a flawless texture, medium to full body, and ultra-fine tannins, this beauty builds incrementally on the palate with terrific mid-palate depth and a stunning finish. It’s sexier and more charming compared to the more backward Haut Brion, yet I suspect it will age just as long.

About the Producer

Château La Mission Haut-Brion, the illustrious neighbor of Haut-Brion in Pessac-Léognan, possesses a history as rich as its terroir. This *cru classé*, whose origins date back to the 16th century, has experienced many lives, from religious congregations to the Woltner family, before being acquired by the Dillon family. Today, Prince Robert of Luxembourg oversees this exceptional estate, perpetuating a tradition of excellence. The red wines of Château La Mission Haut-Brion express the elegance of the gravel terroir of the Pessac-Léognan appellation with refinement. Ample and complex, they captivate with their depth and their ability to age over the years. La Chapelle de La Mission Haut-Brion, the estate’s second wine, offers a more immediate approach to the property's style without sacrificing any quality. The former Château La Tour Haut-Brion, now integrated into this second wine, bears witness to the site's long history. Legend has it that the Lazarist monks, the original owners, chose this privileged location for its proximity to a water source with beneficial properties. Among the most sought-after vintages are Château La Mission Haut-Brion, La Chapelle de La Mission Haut-Brion, and Château La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc—essential benchmarks for understanding the identity of the estate.
