Jeb Dunnuck Tasting Note

The 2021 Châteauneuf Du Pape is a solid effort in the vintage. A normal blend of mostly Grenache with 10% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre, with a splash of Cinsault, it has a beautiful perfume of ripe cherries, fresh strawberries, sappy green flowers, and peppery garrigue. This carries to a medium-bodied, layered, elegant Châteauneuf with fine tannins, a beautiful overall sense of balance, and outstanding length. It shows the fresh, pretty, nuanced style of the vintage and is a beautiful wine to enjoy over the coming decade. It's in the same ballpark as the 2008. As I’ve written many times, Le Vieux Donjon is a reference point estate for classically made Châteauneuf du Pape. Their Châteauneuf du Pape comes from a mix of terroirs and is always a majority Grenache with smaller amounts of Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault, partially destemmed, with the élevage in a mix of concrete tanks and large foudre. In addition to their red, they make a terrific Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc.

About the Producer

Domaine Le Vieux Donjon is an iconic figure in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where the Michel family has been crafting wines of character for several generations. In the past, grapes were sold to merchants, but Lucien Michel and his wife Marie-José made a decisive shift by developing estate bottling in the 1980s. The wines of Le Vieux Donjon quickly earned their prestige, becoming essential benchmarks of the appellation. Today, Claire Michel and her brother François perpetuate the family legacy with infectious energy, while preserving the soul of this unique place. The estate is particularly renowned for its Châteauneuf-du-Pape red, an ample and complex wine that eloquently expresses the richness of the Rhône terroir. More exclusive, the Châteauneuf-du-Pape white captivates with its finesse and originality. Legend has it that Lucien’s grandfather, a passionate farmer, replanted the entire vineyard after the phylloxera crisis. Le Vieux Donjon thus embodies the excellence and authenticity of the great wines of the Southern Rhône Valley. Among the most sought-after cuvées are Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc, both essential references for understanding the identity of the estate.
