Jeb Dunnuck Tasting Note

The 2014 Palmer is up with the crème de la crème of the vintage and should merit an even higher score in 5-7 years. A blend of 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot brought up in 65% new French oak, its deep ruby/purple-tinged color is followed by a rich, opulent bouquet of blackcurrants, black cherries, chocolate, and tobacco, with hints of graphite and background oak. With more texture and mid-palate depth than most in the vintage, this terrific 2014 is medium to full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, layered and as hedonistic and sexy as it gets in the vintage. Give bottle 4-5 years and it should drink nicely for two decades.

About the Producer

About the Producer

Château Palmer, a prestigious representative of the Margaux appellation, is an essential benchmark among the great wines of Bordeaux. Its name recalls General Palmer, a British officer who fell under the spell of this exceptional terroir at the beginning of the 19th century. The Sichel and Mälher-Besse families, the owners, passionately perpetuate the tradition of excellence of this *cru classé*, which is often considered a "second" growth due to its exceptionally high quality. Under the leadership of Thomas Duroux, Château Palmer strives to reveal the purest expression of its Margaux terroir. The wines are distinguished by their velvety texture, complex aromatic bouquet, and their ability to combine immediate drinkability with longevity. The grand vin, Château Palmer, offers superb refinement and harmony, while Alter Ego de Palmer provides a more modern interpretation of the same terroir. Notably, Château Palmer was among the pioneers of biodynamics in the Médoc, a philosophy that contributes to the uniqueness of its wines. The estate notably works with appellations such as Troisièmes Crus, which consistently extend its signature style. Among the most sought-after cuvées are Château Palmer, Château Palmer Alter Ego de Palmer, and Château Palmer Historical XIXth Century Wine—useful benchmarks for understanding the identity of the estate.
