The 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee du Mon Aieul is close to full maturity. Dark plum/garnet, with a nose of licorice, lavender, seaweed, blueberry, and black raspberry, the wine is full-bodied, still very fresh, but complex, with silky tannins and a broad, savory mouthfeel. Everything seems resolved, and the wine looks to be at its peak of complexity. It should hold here for another 3-4 years, but last easily for 10-12. In terms of the best vintages of Mon Aieul, I would have to rank the 2003, 2006, and 2007 superior to the 1998, which was the debut vintage of this cuvee from proprietors Jean-Pierre and Thierry Usseglio.
Very ripe, with prune and plum. Full-bodied and soft, this traditional Châteauneuf offers leather, wet earth and roasted chestnuts. Well made and flavorful. Drink now through 2015.

Histoire du domaine
Francis USSEGLIO quitte l'Italie et s'installe à Châteauneuf-du-Pape en 1931 comme ouvrier agricole. En 1948, il obtient 8 merveilleux hectares en métayage, qu'il finira par racheter.
En 1963, son fils Pierre prend la succession. Il va agrandir le domaine et changer le nom par domaine Usseglio Pierre.
Aujourd'hui Jean Pierre et son frère Thierry USSEGLIO (4ème génération) exploitent les 22 hectares de Châteauneuf-du-Pape, 2 hectares et demi de côtes-du-Rhône ainsi qu'un demi hectare de vin de table. Entièrement travaillé et vendangé à la main, le domaine sublime ces vins grâce à des pieds de vignes âgés de 50 ans en moyenne.
