Jeb Dunnuck Tasting Note

Still youthful with a deep ruby hue, the 2010 Château Angelus is brilliant stuff and unquestionably ranks with the finest vintages of this cuvée, even if I still have a slight preference for the 2009. Classic Angelus aromatics of darker fruits, leafy tobacco, flowers, graphite, and truffly earth all emerge from the bouquet. It's big, rich, and full-bodied on the palate, yet it never puts a foot wrong and is flawlessly balanced, with ripe, building, unquestionably present tannins and a gorgeous finish. Tasted from multiple bottles, this majestic, utterly seamless, deep, layered beauty has some accessibility today yet will unquestionably cruise for another 30 years if well stored. Drink 2026-2056.

About the Producer

Château Angelus, Premier Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Émilion, is a name that resonates with the history of this prestigious appellation. Legend has it that the bells of the three surrounding churches once guided the work of the winemakers, a spiritual heritage that still marks the estate today. The de Boüard de Laforest family, firmly established since the end of the 18th century, watches over this exceptional cru. Today, Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal embodies the eighth generation, breathing new momentum into the estate. The vineyard benefits from a remarkable terroir, where clay-limestone and clay-sand-limestone soils fully express their potential. The grape varieties, with a significant proportion of Cabernet Franc, contribute to the elegance and complexity of Château Angelus wines. In addition to its grand vin, the estate also offers Le Carillon de l'Angelus, providing another perspective on this unique Saint-Émilion terroir, as well as Tempo d'Angelus. It is a beautiful family story that continues to be written, driven by the passion and ambition to reveal the full richness of this cru. Among the most sought-after cuvées are Château Angelus, Le Carillon de l'Angelus, and Château Angelus 'Hommage à Elisabeth Bouchet'—essential benchmarks for understanding the identity of the estate.
