Wine Advocate Tasting Note

From overwhelmingly Grenache vines in a high mountain pass above Vingrau that suggested its name, the 2004 Cotes du Roussillon Villages La Petite Siberie surely represents the point at (or by) which Bizeul and his devoted wine-loving followers will have parted company with me. From its hugely ester-filled, borderline-volatile nose through its thickly-sweet and new-oaky palate presence, to its unctuous but (its name notwithstanding) decidedly warm finish, this is the very model of a modern major fruit bomb, about which I can’t help but wonder where it’s headed in the bottle and whether it will seem less over-the-top in a few years’ time. For all of this wine’s textural torpor and lavish ripeness, one can no more overlook its formidable underlying tannins than one can its 100% new oak. All that said, those sufficiently wealthy and well-placed to access this Siberian ticket will experience an amazing sheer intensity and length, as surreally sweet black fruit preserves mingle with tea, tar, and pencil lead. For me – it least in its youthful state – “Little Siberia” proves hard labor after the second sip. Importer: Eric Solomon Selections, Charlotte, NC; tel. (704) 358-1565

About the Producer

The Le Clos des Fées estate is nestled in the heart of the Côtes du Roussillon, in a preserved landscape where nature expresses itself fully. Founded at the end of the 20th century by Hervé Bizeul, a former sommelier, this estate quickly revealed the potential of its terroir. Today, Le Clos des Fées spans some thirty hectares and offers red wines of beautiful expression, as well as whites with a distinct character. The old vines draw their strength from this unique soil, giving birth to vintages that captivate connoisseurs. Among the estate's iconic wines are the Côtes du Roussillon Villages, faithful expressions of the appellation, as well as single-plot cuvées like "La Petite Sibérie" and "Les Sorcières du Clos des Fées," which reflect specific micro-terroirs. The "De Battre Mon Coeur S'est Arrêté" cuvée is another signature of the estate, testifying to its commitment to vibrant and authentic wines. It is said that Hervé Bizeul was among the first to foresee the finesse that the Roussillon could offer, an intuition confirmed with every vintage. Among the most sought-after cuvées are Domaine du Clos des Fees Cotes du Roussillon Village La Petite Siberie, Domaine du Clos des Fees Cotes du Roussillon Villages, and Domaine du Clos des Fees Cotes du Roussillon Les Sorcieres du Clos des Fees, all useful benchmarks for understanding the identity of the house.
