Vinous Tasting Note

The 1987 Latour is another off-vintage I had not tasted before, one I had requested, knowing how well this First Growth performs in off-vintages. That said, the estate had lost its mojo in this era and served blind against the 1967; this is no match. According to Frédéric Engerer, the Merlot was severely affected this year. It has a simple red cherry and cranberry nose that lacks a bit of complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with a grainy texture and moderate depth with dark berry fruit laced with cola, but uncharacteristically, it tapers towards a rather light and ephemeral finish. Tasted at the château.

About the Producer

Château Latour, Premier Cru Classé of Pauillac, is much more than a name: it is an emblem of the Médoc. Its history is written in the stones of its tower, a remnant of an era when it guided ships along the Gironde. Long owned by the de Ségur family, including the famous "Prince of Vines," the estate has traversed the centuries while maintaining its prestige. Today, under the impetus of François Pinault and his passionate teams, Château Latour continues to write the history of the great wines of Bordeaux. Its 47-hectare vineyard, located in the heart of the "Enclos," produces wines of rare depth and complexity. The powerful tannic structure, the signature of this grand cru, gives it a remarkable capacity for aging. One finds in Latour wines aromas of blackcurrant, leather, and hazelnut—testaments to a unique terroir. In addition to its illustrious Premier Grand Cru Classé, the estate also offers Les Forts de Latour, a second wine of great elegance, as well as Le Pauillac de Latour, a more accessible expression of the Latour style. The estate works notably with appellations such as Premiers Crus, which consistently extend its signature.
